La Escena
A document on Rican punk
La Escena is a documentary film by Puerto Rican filmmaker and musician Guillermo Gómez Álvarez. It is a look back at what it meant to be a punk in the Island in the late eighties/early nineties, and how this subculture related to the world around it. The film takes a decidedly nostalgic view at the scenes of the past, yet manages to give a welcoming look at the ushers of the new punk rock scene, one that seems stronger now than ever before.
The packaging was commissioned by the publisher of the DVD, local independent label Discos de Hoy’s founder José Ibáñez, an enterprising guitarrist that runs the single most active independent label in Puerto Rico. After having seen the film a few times, I decided to turn the packaging into a homage to the home-viewing experience by taking pictures of the screen as the film was playing. I later used these moiré-infused, pixelated images to illustrate the tone of the film in its package design. The text is kept to a minimum to allow the pictures to take center stage in describing the viewing experience.
